Baking Essentials

There are so many different tools that can be used for baking, but there are some that are absolutely essential.. in my opinion anyway. Here’s a list of just 4 of my essential baking tools.

Food Scale

If you’ve read my first blog post, you’ll know that I think having a food scale is essential because it’s more accurate to weigh your ingredients. If you get recipes from people who weigh their ingredients, having your own scale saves you from having to do any conversions - but don’t forget to zero your scale!

Freestanding Mixer

Freestanding mixers are expensive, but definitely a must-have because they make life so much easier. Aside from the standard paddle, whisk and dough hook attachments, you can also get pasta machine attachments, food grinders, spiralizers, shredders and more! With a freestanding mixer, you don’t have to put in as much effort since the machine does all the work for you. Instead of standing there for 20 minutes kneading dough, your machine will do it for you in half the time! It’s also great for making large quantities of batter, buttercream, etc. Having a freestanding mixer definitely encouraged me to be in the kitchen more often. Try checking garage sales or consignment shops if you don’t want to spend a lot! You can also ask a friend to borrow one for a few days to see if you think it’s worth investing in. (Shout out to my best friend Sam for giving me her Kitchen Aid - best gift I’ve ever received!)

Handheld Electric Mixer

If a freestanding mixer is out of budget, a handheld electric mixer is a must. It takes up less space than a freestanding mixer, and is simpler to clean as well. Handheld mixers are perfect for whipping up cream, easily making batter, or whisking your egg whites for meringues! A handheld mixer is also preferred over a standing mixer if you’re making smaller quantities.

Rubber Spatula

Rubber or silicone spatulas are great. They’re perfect for folding ingredients (different than mixing - FYI!) and they’re also fantastic at getting every last bit of batter out of the bowl - no batter left behind! Try to avoid getting rubber spatulas with wooden handles - food often gets caught between the wood and rubber and it's not super easy to get out.

Cheers,

Prabha
